Warren Wins

Election day just a long day! Started with waking up early and photographing Elizabeth Warren casting her vote in Cambridge and ended later that night with photographing her celebrating her victory actually, it didn't end there, after that I had to go by the Boston Convention center and get images of sad Romney supporters leaving the venue.

Clean up Continues after Hurricane Sandy

After the elections finally passed I found a free moment to go home to New York to see the damage after Hurricane Sandy first hand. I learned to surf on Long Beach New York and knew it was a must for me to be there to photograph the devastation or else I knew I would regret no going years later. This being an important assignment close to heart I decided it was the perfect time ( or excuse) to purchase and shoot with a new Canon 5d Mark III. I can describe the camera with just one word, AMAZING!!! My parents were without power for 8 days and I brought them 9 gallons of gas, something I never thought I'd have to do, transport gas in from another state. I have become accustomed to photographing devastation but this time it was literally close to home. I was stopped twice by the NYPD (a first for me while being in the field after a major news event.) The first time was was by a bored cop who wanted to shoot the breeze about my camera gear and the second time was when a cruiser saw me walking into Breezy Point, NY to avoid the long traffic jam to get in. They stopped me to offer me a ride in, I must say the NYPD was really nice to me. Never has a hurricane been so appropriately named as Sandy. Many of the streets and homes in New York were literally layered in feet of sand. in Long Beach, NY a actual montian of sand cleared from the street was made multiple stories high!!

Mattapan Massacre Verdict reaction

An emotional assignment to say the least! I was outside Suffolk Superior Court this afternoon as the verdict was read in the Mattapan Massacre Trial. Edward Washington was acquitted of all charges and the jury was also deadlocked on murder charges against Dwayne Moore. Reaction to the verdict quickly poured outside as family and friends of the victims came out. Tears fell as some fainted, sadness turned to anger. Threats were made towards the media for filming and photographing. I was threatened multiple times and another photographer required a police escort to her car after she received threats as well.

"Best Week Ever!!"

"This has been the best week ever!!" I said as I saw Boston Globe Photographer & Boston Press Photographer Association President Bill Greene today at a press conference held by Boston Mayor Thomas Menino regarding staying safe during the Super Bowl this Sunday. Bill jokingly responded to me "This has been MY best week ever!!". We laughed. The joke here was that Bill and I have seen each other out on assignment everyday this week.
It began on Sunday with the New England Patriots Super Bowl send-off.
Monday- At an Occupy Boston Protest.
Tuesday- The wake for former Boston Mayor Kevin White.
Wednesday- The Funeral of former Mayor Kevin White.
Thursday (today)- Mayor Menino's press conference on Super Bowl safety in the city.

Seen Memories

Like many, I spent the holidays traveling among the homes of my loved ones. One stop on the nearly thousand mile annual journey was to my father's home in Pennsylvania. Visiting there now, my father's home seemed to be the place where I would leave forgotten belongings after the many moves of my early twenties. As I spent a few days at my father's home I couldn't help but see these items I had left behind from my past and they all seemed to conjure up an unforgettable memory. I had to photograph these items and share them because I felt that this is something that happens to all of us.

I found these cameras in a box hidden in my father's home. They are from when I once sold cameras at a flea market on the upper west side of Manhattan right beside the Museum of Natural History. They remind me of the long summer weekends I would spend beside my table of old camera gear and the interactions I had with those who stopped by. I became a regular. Like many of the things you do in life, I never did it for the money, I did it for the experience.

The typewriter and painting where remnants from my apartment in South Boston where I lived while in school. Both were found items.

These ladders are the same ones I used when I was a house painter for two summers in order to pay for college. I would work 50 hour weeks for nearly 4 months during the school year in order to help pay for my schooling. These ladders remind me of that unforgettable time.

I took this Volkswagen peddle car as carry-on baggage during my flight home after visiting the Gulf Coast for the first time right after Hurricane Katrina. It was a gift for my father, who's a big VW fan. Seeing this brought me back to the memories of going down to photograph Hurricane Katrina.
